Eastwood also directed the film and produced some revolutionary footage long before digital special effects were possible. Unfortunately an experienced climber and guide helping out died during the shooting. Over 60 people have died trying to climb the mountain since 1935.

The Eiger is famous for its 5,900 ft north face of rock and ice, which is the biggest north face in the Alps.
